VTP Components




There are several key components that you should be familiar with when learning VTP. Here is a brief description of the components, which will be further explained as you go through the chapter.

VTP Domain-VTP domain consists of one or several interconnected switches. All switches share domain VLAN configuration details using VTP advertisements. A router or Layer 3 switch defines the boundary of each domain.

VTP Advertisements-VTP uses a hierarchy of advertisements to distribute and synchronize VLAN configurations across the network.

VTP Modes-The switch can be configured in one of three modes: a server, client, or transparent.

VTP Server-VTP server domain to advertise VLAN information to VTP other VTP-enabled switches in the same VTP domain. VTP servers store the VLAN information for the entire domain in the nonvolatile memory. The server where VLAN can created, deleted, or renamed in the domain.

VTP Client-VTP client also functions as VTP servers, but you can not create, modify, or delete VLAN-network client VTP. VTP client only stores the VLAN information for the entire domain and switch on. Resetting the switch deletes the VLAN information. You must configure VTP client mode on the switch.

VTP Transparent-Transparent switches forward VTP advertising clients and servers too VTP VTP. Transparent switches do not participate in VTP. Network VLAN, which are created, renamed, or deleted on transparent switches only by the local switch.

VTP Pruning-VTP pruning increases network bandwidth available, restricting flooded traffic to those roads that the traffic must use to reach the target devices. Without VTP pruning, a switch floods broadcast, multicast and unknown targeted traffic for all channels within the trunk VTP domain, though receiving switches might discard them.
