VTP Modes Overview
Switch Cisco, wrote software Cisco IOS, can be customized to any server, client, or transparent mode. These modes differ in how they are used to manage and advertise VTP domains and networks VLAN.
Switch(config)#vtp mode ?
client Set the device to client mode.
server Set the device to server mode.
transparent Set the device to transparent mode.
Server Mode
In server mode, you can create, modify, and delete VLAN-network for the entire area VTP. VTP server is the default mode for the switch Cisco. VTP servers advertise their VLAN configuration to other switches in the same VTP domain and synchronize their VLAN configuration with other switches based on advertisements received over the highways. VTP server to track updates via the configuration revision number. The other switches in the VTP domain is to compare the number of configuration versions with the version obtained from the VTP server, to see if they need to synchronize its database VLAN.
Client Mode
If the switch is in client mode, you can not create, modify, or delete VLAN-network. Also, VLAN configuration information, the switch that the customer receives from the switch VTP VTP server is stored in the database VLAN, not NVRAM. Consequently, VTP client requires less memory than server VTP. When a customer shuts down and restarts the EPR, it passes the request to advertise on the VTP server for updated information about the configuration of VLAN.
The switches are configured as a VTP client more commonly found in large networks because network consisting of many hundreds of switches, difficult to coordinate the modernization of the network. Often there are many network administrators working at different times of the day. With only a few switches that are physically able to maintain VLAN configuration makes it easier to control the update VLAN and keep track of which network administrators performed them.
For large networks, having client switches are also more cost-effectively. By default, all switches are configured to be server VTP. This configuration is suitable for small networks where the size of VLAN information is small, and easy to store information in non-volatile memory on the switch. In a large network of many hundreds of switches, the network administrator must decide if the cost of purchasing switches with enough NVRAM to store duplicate VLAN information is too much. The cost-conscious network administrator can choose to configure a few well-equipped switches as servers VTP, and then use switches with less memory as customers VTP. Although the discussion network redundancy beyond this course, it is known that the amount of VTP servers should be selected to provide a degree of redundancy which is desirable in the network.
Transparent Mode
Switches wrote in VTP transparent mode forward advertisements they receive on trunk ports to other switches in the network. VTP transparent mode switches do not advertise its VLAN configuration and does not synchronize its VLAN configuration with any other switch. Setting the switch to the VTP transparent mode when you have the configuration of VLAN, which have local significance and should not be separated from the rest of the network.
In the transparent mode, the VLAN configuration stored in non-volatile memory (but not advertised to other switches) so that the configuration is available after a restart of the switch. This means that when the VTP transparent mode switch reboots, it will not return to the default VTP server, but remains in transparent mode VTP.
Ok, That's all about the types of mode VTP Thank you for visiting, and have a nice day
